Outreach in Uganda

In the situation of Uganda, the Court’s outreach activities started after the launch of the investigation by the Prosecutor in 2004 and the opening of the field office in 2005, with consultations of key groups of Ugandan society. It resulted in 2006 in the creation of a network of partners. Initial outreach activities targeted the districts of Acholi, Lango and Teso, as they appeared to be the most directly affected regions. It was then extended to include the districts of West Nile Region, which also suffered from the conflict in Northern Uganda.
The Outreach activities conducted in 2007 by the Court have evolved from targeting specific groups such as traditional and religious leaders and civil society to engaging the grass root population in particular, internally displaced people in the Northern part of the country.
As engaging the general population is still key to the Court’s objectives, Outreach activities will focus, during 2008, on strengthening existing programmes and partnerships and creating new ones (especially to reach the youth and Women), with the aim of reaching a wider audience amongst the affected communities of the Northern part of the country. More specifically, the activities will be conducted in towns, villages and the IDP camps that were not previously targeted by the Outreach team and reaching places where activities have been previously organised with the aim of managing the expectations of the communities concerned and to strengthen the messages of the Court.
