Frequently asked questions
I am older than 35. Can I still apply for an internship?
No. Interns should not be older than 35 years old. For applicants to the Visiting Professionals programme there is no age limit.
Can I have the recommendation letters sent separate from my application?
No. The Court does not accept incomplete applications, meaning that references should be included with the application form. The application process is greatly slowed down by sending applications in separate parts. Therefore, you are advised to hold your application until you have received both your recommendations and send the complete application to the stated address.
How do I find out the status of my application?
All completed Internship/Visiting Professional applications are distributed to the Sections the applicant selected, for consideration. During this reviewing process, no information on the status can be given. Due to the large number of applications, only selected candidates will be informed in writing. Please note that the application/ selection process may take up to 4-5 months.
What is the deadline for submitting my application?
There are recruitment deadlines specified by each of the participating Organs of the Court.
Are Internship/ Visiting Professional positions on a full-time basis?
Yes. All Internship positions offered by the Court are based on a full-time basis only.
Am I entitled to annual leave?
Selected interns / visiting professionals are eligible for 2½ days leave per month, subject to their supervisor's approval. Leave can not be requested before the Internship/ Visiting Professional period has started.
Do I receive a Certificate upon completion of my Internship?
Yes. Upon completion of the Regular Internship/Visiting Professional Programme, a certificate will be issued by the Human Resources Section, confirming the duration.
What are the visa requirements needed for an Internship for The Netherlands?
Nationals of Andorra, Argentina, Austria, Australia, Belgium,Bolivia, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia,Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Demmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Monaco,New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdon,the United Sattes of America, Uruguay, Vatican City, Venezuela do not require a visa to enter The Netherlands.
Nationals of all other countries need a visa. Visas can only be applied for through the Travel & Visa Unit of the ICC once an internship offer has been made.
Are Internship/Visiting Professional positions only available to those with a legal background?
Although a majority of the Internships/Visiting Professional positions offered specifically require a legal background, there are positions available where it is not a requirement, such as the Public Information and Documentation Section, Finance, Victims and Witnesses Unit, Services Section and/or Information Technology An educational background in either, sociology, political sciences, psychology, social work, international relations, journalism, translation and interpretation or information technology background may be more appropriate.
Can I apply for more than one organ at the same time?
No, Candidates can apply for only one Organ of the Court at any one time.
Do I get assistance to find accommodation in The Hague?
The ICC holds no responsibility for finding accomodation.Unfortunately, we do no have the resources to assist candidates in their search. Internet is a good source.
If I am an EC-funded Intern/Visiting Professional and have my own insurance, is the insurance provided by the ICC mandatory?
The emergency insurance provided by the ICC is mandatory for all Interns/ Visiting Professionals funded under the terms of the European Comission grant.
If I am an EC-funded Intern/Visiting Professional and buy my own flight ticket, can it be reimbursed?
No, your flight can be only arranged by our travel unit. No ticket bought by the candidate will be reimbursed.
Can I change my starting date?
No. Once you have been selected and the starting date has been negotiated the starting date can not been changed unless there is a major reason.
